Full name: Jayadevacchandas
Author: Jayadeva
Year: 800 c.
Language: Sanskrit
Discipline: Chandas
Structure: 8 chapters
Alternative names: Chandaḥśāstra

Jayadeva’s Chandas is one of the earliest surviving works of metrics (chandaḥśāstra), after Piṅgala’s Sūtras and the treatment of meters in the Nāṭyaśāstra. It adopts Piṅgala’s technical terminology, but uses a novel mode of definition, where the metrical forms are both defined and exemplified in a single pāda of the meter in question. The text was widely studied, especially among Jains.
