Story:
  • The RK attempts to extend the principles of rasaśāstra that were formulated vis-à-vis nāṭya texts, to also explain kāvya. Premodern scholars (e.g. Vidyānātha, Siṅgabhūpala) as well as modern researchers (e.g. Pischel) have confused Rudrabhaṭṭa – the author of Rasakalikā, Rudraṭa – author of the Kāvyālaṅkāra and Rudrabhaṭṭa -the author of the Śṛṅgāratilaka to be the same individual. Kalpakam Sankaranarayanan (1988) has laid this matter to rest. Cited in Rasaratnākara of Sāḷva [says Rudrabhaṭṭan rasakalikeyoḷ] Vidyānātha – PR borrows amply from RK, doesn’t cite. Vidyādhara takes RK as pūrvapakṣa [nāyaka and rasa] Siṅgabhūpāla – Rasārṇavasudhākara without naming source Mallinātha – Kumārasambhava and Sam. Śiśupālavadha commentaries Kumārasvāṃin- Ratnāpaṇa - without naming source Viśvanātha - Sāhityadarpaṇa [nāyaka and rasa] Amṛtānandayogin’s Alaṅkārasaṅgraha Akbaraśahi Śṛṅgāradarpaṇa 1670 CE Sāḷva – Rasaratnākara Vāsudeva’s commentary on Karpūramañjarī
