The Wellcome Collection in London is one of the largest collections of Indic manuscripts outside the subcontinent. It is unique in its diversity, with an estimated 12,000 manuscripts from over 1,000 years, spanning different genres and languages from all over South Asia.

Wellcome is committed to a program of increasing accessibility of its collection. An instance is its project to create fully searchable electronic texts from the handwritten notes by the historian of science David Pingree, so as to put into the public domain a rich source of information on Sanskrit manuscripts that were hitherto almost completely unstudied.

In collaboration with the Wellcome Institute, the goal of this project is to record metadata on 100 manuscripts that were originally cataloged by David Pingree and link this information to the digital version of these manuscripts. This initiative is part of the SAMHiTA project.
