The author of the Mahimnaḥ-stava is usually identified as (Ācārya) Puṣpadanta. He is identified variously as a divine musician (gandharva) or as an attendant of Śiva (gaṇa). Several śaiva āgama texts are ascribed to a Puṣpadanta.

The Kathāsaritsāgara gives a tale of Śiva’s attendant Puṣpadanta being reborn as the grammarian Vararuci. Jayantabhaṭṭa gives a verse describing this episode in the Nyāyamañjarī.
