Basavakalyāṇa

Site
ID: 100411
Short name: Basavakalyan
State: Karnataka
Current district: Bidar
Alternative names: Kalyāṇa
Name in local script: ಬಸವಕಲ್ಯಾಣ, ಕಲ್ಯಾಣ

The site named as Kalyāṇa in inscriptions, Kalyāṇa was the seat of the ‘later’ Cāḷukya-s, often referred to as the Kalyāṇa Cāḷukya dynasty, and it was later ruled by the Kaḷacūri-s. The site is associated with the Liṅgāyata-Vīraśaiva saint Basava, and hence the name Basavakalyan.

This place and the branch of the Cāḷukyas are wrongly called Kalyāṇi by the scholars J.F. Fleet and R.G.Bhandarkar, and this error has persisted in later writings.
