Koppal was an important jaina centre from the 7th century CE onwards. It was a holy site (tīrtha) and was the home of the Yāpanīya saṅgha, and has Gaṅga, Rāṣṭrakūṭa and Calukya inscriptions . There are records of many jaina laypersons committing ritual suicide (sallekhana) at Koppaḷa.
