- Avantivarman is was a king in the line of Utpala, who overthrew the Karkotaka kings of Kashmir.
- He built a new capital called Avantipura, where he built temples to Vishnu and Shiva, as well as patronizing Buddhist monasteries.
- According to Kalhaṇa, Avantivarman’s reign was a period of relative prosperity and he supported several Sanskrit scholars and poets - Muktākaṇa, Śivasvāmin, Ratnākara, Ānandavardhana and Kallaṭa
