Bhavabhūti is one of the most well-known authors of Sanskrit plays. He wrote three that became classics: the Mahāvīracarita and the Uttararāmacarita, both based on the Rāma story, and the Mālatīmādhava, with an invented plot.

He was associated with the court of Yaśovarman of Kānyakubja (Kannauj) at the beginning of the eighth century.
