Stefan Baums is interested in early Buddhist manuscripts and inscriptions, Sanskrit kāvya literature, and the development of South Asian writing cultures. He is Lead Researcher of the Buddhist Manuscripts from Gandhāra project at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities / Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
